How To Get Started in Magic? One of the most common questions I get is - how do you get started in Magic? That’s a great question and there is no single answer. Nowadays with the Internet you can learn magic from anywhere in the world with or without an in person mentor but below I outline what i think is the best way to approach learning magic to get you from knowing nothing to magic master in the shortest time frame.  Start at the beginning. Get a beginners magic book or instructional video. I can highly recommend Magic, The complete Course by Joshua Jay or my own beginners magic video - Party Tricks but most beginners magic books will do. Then pick a “self working” (something that doesn’t involve much sleight of hand) trick and learn it so thoroughly that you can do this without thinking about it, then pick one or 2 more and do the same. The idea behind doing this is you have a 2 or 3 trick “mini act” then you can perform using no sleight of hand so you can forget about complicated, sometimes hard to learn sleight of hand and focus on astonishing people.  This has several benefits.  1. you can focus on performing and presentation which is one of the most important skills for any magician and it’s hard to master If you’re not performing in front of a live audience. 2. You can see if you actually enjoy performing magic without a minimal amount of effort. Maybe you’ll learn a few tricks and decide this isn’t for you and then you haven’t wasted years perfecting sleight of hand for nothing 3 It gives you confidence. Once you have started performing and the audience likes your magic this gives you confidence to keep going through the more complicated parts.  Start learning some sleight of hand Now that you have your mini act of “self working” magic you start to level up your magic by learning sleight of hand. Personally I think card magic is the easiest way to start learning sleight of hand. Pick a cluster of 2 or 3 moves practice them a lot, learn some tricks with them so you can practice in context Learn the Classics  There are some classic tricks in magic such as “The Cups and Balls” “The Ambitious Card” “The Cut and Restored Rope” you should learn these even if you don’t want to perform them. The reason is by learning the classics you will perfect fundamental skills than you can apply to any other magic you’d like to learn and perform. It’s a similar to learning scales in music. Find your style There are so many styles of magic you can focus on, card tricks, coin magic, mentalism. You can focus om performing close up magic or for larger audiences on stage and it’s the same with performing styles, you can be funny, serious etc. While you are starting out find what you like at start working on that, at least at the beginning.  How to Learn Magic? Just like styles of magic there are so many options to learn.  You can join a magic club. Most major cities have a Magic club they are sometimes formal and sometimes very casual. Here in Sydney we have the Sydney Magic Club. Joining your local magic clubs can be a great resource for learning magic, often there are experienced magicians who are happy to teach you things or lend you books. They also offer a place to “rehearse” you can perform in front of club members and get instant feedback. Books and videos. Traditionally books is where all the best magic secrets were kept and largely that’s still true. Magicians are prolific authors and there are books written explaining all types of magic, close up magic, stage magic, card magic, “mindreading”, grand illusions it’s all in books. With magic though it’s often easier to learn visually and this is where videos come in. Magicians have been making videos explaining magic since the days of VHS. Nowadays most videos are in streaming or download format. Videos slowed down frame by frame can be a great way to learn the sometimes complex procedures that go into a magic trick Find a Mentor  If possible find a mentor, someone to give you feedback and and advice can be invaluable when it comes to learning magic. Apart from a magic club you can try and connect with a magician you see at an event, they may not be able to mentor you but can point you in the right direction.  Hope this helps you begin your magic journey. From those who self-taught their skills watching YouTube to those who trained at an intense full-time magic company for two years, we can reveal the secrets of some of the most popular magicians across the state. Liam Power - Magician Liam Power has travelled across Australia and around the world making people laugh and scratch their head in confusion. He has performed on national TV shows, filmed a documentary in Cambodia with The Fred Hollows Foundation and spoken at TEDx events. The list of magic and arts festivals he’s performed at is a little too long to mention. How did you break into magic? I got into magic while on a family holiday in Thailand. We were in a small village near the Laos border, it was Christmas morning and there was one other foreigner in town. We were both eating breakfast on Christmas morning and he walked up to us and performed some really amazing first class magic. From that moment I was hooked. For the next two days I followed him around while he was performing magic shows for the Red Cross. He eventually taught me a trick. Many years later I lived with him and his wife for a couple of months while he trained me. How long did it take you to do magic professionally? Not long to start doing it part-time. I started performing magic in 2001 and in 2002 I was doing kids shows as a weekend job in high-school. After school, I did a chef apprenticeship and ended up leaving chefing and working as a full-time magician in 2008. Is it a competitive industry? It is surprisingly competitive. There are a lot more professional magicians out there than you’d think. Having said that, there is a great community where magicians collaborate and help each other out with our acts and passing on gigs. So while it is competitive, there is also a great sense of community between a lot of performers. What does your work involve? It’s a lot more diverse than most people think. I’m essentially running a small business as well as performing magic in which many performances are different. I might be doing a small bespoke show for 20 people and a large stage performance for more than 1000 people the next day. I also collaborate a lot with clients, creating custom magic specific to their events or products. I’m on the road a lot, driving or flying to events. More of my day to day work is coming up with new ideas, marketing, website development, bookkeeping etc. What is the longest it has taken you to perfect a trick? I was traveling through Central America for six months. On the way home I was planning to meet up with a mentor of mine in Boston, the guy I met in Thailand all those years ago. I wanted to impress him when I saw him so I was learning a particularly hard bit of sleight of hand. It took me every day of six months. Where do you get your inspiration? In many places – from other performers, comedians, circus performers, other magicians etc. I used to be a chef and I got inspiration there. My favourite magicians who inspire me are Rune Klan, David Williamson and Tommy Wonder. What is the best part about your job? Definitely the performing. Performing at music festivals are my absolute favourite. They just have such a great atmosphere and the crowd is always really fun. What is the hardest part about your job? Probably the uncertainty. There is no regular pay cheque. Have you ever had anything go wrong in a performance, and how did you recover? Yes! More than once. It depends on what goes wrong. Sometimes the audience doesn’t notice, sometimes you can change the ending of a trick. If something has gone horribly wrong it’s best to just acknowledge it to the audience and move on. The important thing is not to get flustered. What is your ultimate career goal? I’m not sure I have one. I’m happy being able to earn my living performing magic. That doesn’t mean that I’m lazy or that I stand still. Instead of having a big dream or ultimate goal, I like the philosophy spelled out by Tim Minchin in his famous graduation keynote speech, “Nine life lessons,”. He said: “I advocate passionate dedication to the pursuit of short term goals …. Just be aware the next worthy pursuit might be in your periphery, which is why you should be wary of long term dreams. I’ve stayed friends with lots of them.  I started my apprenticeship at est in Sydney with Guy Turland we worked together for almost 3 years under Chef extraordinaire Peter Doyle. I’ve stayed good mates with Guy ever since I left est all those years ago. Guy is now a highly successful chef with a TV show, cookbooks and restaurants in LA and Sydney. His website is Bondi Harvest. I dropped by Guy’s Bondi Cafe, “The Depot” last week for a coffee and he put me on the spot with and conducted this short interview. Below is the transcript Guy - It’s been ages since you stopped cooking full time but I know you still like to keep in touch with the food scene and often work some food events. What are some of your most memorable? Liam - Yeah I think having a chef background gave me a real advantage when it came to creating magic with food and I’ve gotten to create magic for some pretty cool events. I created some custom magic for Gelato Messina for their launch of their collaboration with Tim Tams. I did a combined magic show and cooking demonstration at Bankstown Bites festival where I made ingredients appear then used them in a dish and I’ve done plenty of collaboration magic food events with different venues. Of course the most fun ones have been with you, when we did the charity events at the Depot, you always get in such a fun crowd that loves the magic. Guy - Oh yeah they are always such fun events. I know you still cook a lot, what's your go to easy recipe when you want to impress? Liam - As you know I love freediving and spearfishing and hand caught lobsters are always impressive so probably a hand caught lobster pasta. It's super quick and easy but a real crowd pleaser. Otherwise keeping with the spearfishing theme I’m loving confit bonito with agrodolce lately or for something super healthy and tasty I’ve been charring veggies on the charcoal bbq and making a warm quinoa salad with them.    Guy -  So when’s my dinner invite? I know you live just down the road from me, is most of your work in Sydney or do you have to travel a lot? Liam - I’m lucky that being a magician in Sydney there is a decent amount of work going around. Being the biggest city in the country there are 100’s of large scale events happening every week. I do travel a lot though, mainly interstate and regional, there are so many good festivals and events going on around the country that it’s a great way to get to see Australia. I also do a few events over seas which is always fun    Guy - What sort of events do you mainly perform at nowadays? Liam - Mostly at corporate events but I also perform at a lot of weddings, private parties and festivals Guy - And do you mainly perform on stage or up close style? Liam - Both Probably 70/30 close up to stage. Close up magic is really popular because it’s so flexible and can work in basically any event but sometimes people want to really amaze everyone at once and that’s when I recommend a stage show. A very common question I get at gigs is, what’s it like being a professional magician in Sydney?  For me the best bit about being a magician is seeing the look of amazement on my audience's face but the second best part is the variety. Each day is different, each gig is different and that keeps it fresh and exciting.  Being a magician in Sydney ensures you get hired for a wide variety of events. Over the last month I’ve performed on stage at large scale corporate events, private parties for milestone birthdays such as a 50th, I’ve added that magic touch to a wedding by performing roving magic at the reception, I’ve MC’d an awards night and performed for huge crowds at a music festival.  This variety not only keeps the day to day interesting but it allows me to travel all over Sydney as well as Australia. One of the biggest daily tasks I do is preparation. Before each engagement there is a lot of behind the scenes preparation that goes unseen. The first step is finding out everything I can about the event, what type of event is it, how many people will there be, is the crowd seated or standing, what age group is the crowd, is there a stage what is the clients vision for the event, do they want the magic to be a feature of the night or is it there to highlight or enhance a certain part of the event? Once I know this information I can tailor specific packages to the clients event. This ensures each client gets to see the magic in its best light, and ensures they get the best possible performance.  Once a client decides to book me for an engagement I then start structuring the show. Since no two scenarios are the same no two shows are the same. The content of the show will depend on several factors such as but not limited to, How many guests there will be The location of the venue The layout of the room The AV available   Does the audience speak English Does the client want any custom magic and if they do creating and rehearsing that Creating the audio playlist to accompany the show This means I potentially put many hours of work into the show behind the scenes before I get to performing Practicing and rehearsing is another huge part in the daily life of a magician. As you can imagine magic takes a lot of practice, especially when learning a new technique. For me practice is normally done in intensive chunks when trying to learn a new technique or “slight” Rehearsing is different from practice because it involves rehearsing a whole trick or segment for a show or even a whole show. During a rehearsal you have everything set up as if it was a life performance down to wearing what you would on the day. As you can imagine this takes up a lot of time.  Keeping up to date with the latest developments and techniques in magic is another common task Magic is an ever evolving art and new techniques and products to help achieve great magic come onto the scene all the time. I have to stay up to date with the latest and the best to ensure my audience gets to see the best possible show.  . Being a full time magician in Sydney essentially means I’m running a small business. This means my day to day also includes many "non magic" tasks. Of course you get access to Merivale's famous food and service and ready access to the rest of IVY once your event has finished North Head Quarantine Station.  Situated on the North Head of Sydney Harbour, surrounded by native bushland, North Head Quarantine Station is one of the most unique places in Sydney to have a party. North Head Quarantine Station was Sydney’s actual Quarantine Station up until 1984. Make sure you check it out.  Observatory Hill. You might notice a theme, most of my favourite locations in Sydney have water views, Observatory Hill is no different. In fact Observatory Hill might have the best of the lot with 360 degree views of Sydney harbour and CBD. Bondi Beach is known for its famous white sand and waves and it’s Sydney’s most famous beaches. At the North end lies North Bondi Surf Club.
